Paul D. Van Komen graduated from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 1995 magna cum laude and was admitted as a member of the Order of the Coif. During law school, Mr. Van Komen was a member of the management committee of the BYU Law Review and served as an intern clerk to Judge Russell W. Bench of the Utah Court of Appeals. Prior to law school, received his bachelor’s degree cum laude in accounting and information systems from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University in 1992.
Mr. Van Komen concentrates his practice in the areas of education law and medical malpractice law. In serving as legal counsel, he assists clients in exploring and assessing options, achieving successful outcomes, and preventing problems from occurring.
As part of his practice, he has significant court experience in state and federal court, as well as experience in other alternative dispute resolution forums. In addition, Mr. Van Komen has been involved in numerous appeals before both the Utah Supreme Court and Utah Court of Appeals. He also is experienced in the areas of workers’ compensation, employment issues, asbestos defense, insurance subrogation, and in advising small businesses. Prior to entering private practice, he contributed as a developer of a nationally distributed legal software program for limited liability company formations.
Mr. Van Komen has also been certified by the Utah Division of Occupational & Professional Licensing to act as a panel chair for the prelitigation panel hearings under the Utah Healthcare Malpractice Act. He has also received training and is certified to serve as a mediator for fee mediation from the Utah State Bar. Mr. Van Komen also actively participates in and has been president of the Utah chapter of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management.
